Warning signs you can spot from inside your home — and what to look for if you check the crawl space itself.
Common signs include musty odors in your home, cold floors in winter, visible mold or condensation in the crawl space, high humidity readings upstairs, sagging insulation, pest infestations, and allergy symptoms that worsen at home. SIGNS YOU CAN SPOT FROM INSIDE YOUR HOME
You don't need to enter the crawl space to notice the first warning signs. These symptoms show up in your living areas:
Musty smell on the first floor. This is the most common complaint we hear from Twinsburg homeowners. The stack effect pulls air from the crawl space upward through your home. If the crawl space is damp, that musty, earthy odor comes with it. You may notice it most in closets, near floor vents, and in rooms directly above the crawl space.

Visible mold on joists or subfloor. Black, green, or white mold growth on structural wood is a definitive sign. Wood moisture content above 19% supports mold growth, and in unsealed crawl spaces, joists commonly reach 25-30% moisture content during humid months.
Pest evidence. Rodent droppings, insect damage, or nesting materials indicate that the crawl space environment is attracting pests. Damp, dark, open crawl spaces are ideal habitats for termites, carpenter ants, rodents, and other unwanted visitors.
Efflorescence on foundation walls. White, chalky mineral deposits on concrete block walls indicate that water is migrating through the foundation. This is a clear sign of ongoing moisture intrusion from the exterior.
