SHOULD I KEEP MY CRAWL SPACE VENTS OPEN OR SEAL THEM?

The short answer: seal them. Here's why vented crawl spaces cause more problems than they solve in Ohio.

Seal them — the old practice of venting crawl spaces has been proven to make moisture problems worse in humid climates like Ohio's. Open vents pull hot, humid summer air into a cool crawl space where it condenses on every surface — joists, pipes, ductwork, and the vapor barrier itself. Modern building science recommends sealing vents and conditioning the crawl space instead. This isn't opinion; it's backed by decades of research, and Ohio's building code now allows sealed crawl spaces as the preferred approach.

WHY THE OLD ADVICE WAS WRONG

Building codes from the 1950s through the 1980s required crawl space vents. The theory was simple: fresh air circulation would carry moisture out and keep the space dry. It sounded logical, but it ignored how condensation actually works.
