MAINTENANCE: THE PART PEOPLE SKIP

A battery backup sump pump is only useful if the battery is charged and the pump works when you need it. Test your backup pump quarterly — pour water into the basin with the primary pump unplugged and confirm the backup kicks on. Replace batteries every three to five years, and sooner if the battery isn't holding a charge during testing. Keep the battery terminals clean and the charging unit plugged in at all times.
